In Palimpsest I explore the process of mourning, of loss, pain and the gradual movement toward transcendence. I use my father’s ashes to construct a series of landscapes. I revisit some of my earlier work, using older images as a background surface upon which to impose new images sculpted from the ashes. The combination of the earlier work with this new material creates a palimpsest: one layer depicts a photographed landscape while another depicts something new, made with my father’s remains. With this work I wanted to propose an alternate place where, as in memories and dreams, the past and the present converge and create something new.
